Chronology

After a family tragedy, three generations of the Deetz family return to Winter River. Still haunted by Beetlejuice, Lydia’s life is turned upside down when her teenage daughter Astrid accidentally opens the portal to the afterlife. Jenna Ortega, Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, Catherine O’Hara, Justin Theroux and Monica Bellucci share why filming Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice was an experience they’ll never forget. Tim Burton has said that this film would only get made if Michael Keaton returned to reprise his role.

I’ll admit, I went into this film with no expectations, anticipation, or nostalgia regarding the first film

I wasn’t sure if this was a film for me, but as the film began, the camera panned across land and the somber yet cheery score played, I thought I might like it. In fact, the film’s score and soundtrack were one of the highlights, even though it was less about the Joker and more about the Adams family. We meet a lot of fun and quirky characters, old and new, including three generations of the Deetz family, but I like that the film doesn’t simply repeat the first one.

It was crazy, funny at times, and it looked good

For example, while Lydia Deetz was strange and open to the paranormal in the original film, her daughter Astrid, played by Jenna Ortega, is a skeptic of all things ghost-related and still manages to give off Wednesday Adams vibes. When you think about it, the story naturally had to take a new direction while still incorporating the afterlife. While the story can be over the top and actually predictable in places, it’s fine for what it is, but it left itself a lot to do as it approached its one hour and 45 minute runtime. Overall, I had a lot of fun with Beetlejuice and it was better than expected and I think it can attract new fans.

If you liked the first one, will you like this one?

I can’t say, but I wish this one had come out closer to Halloween because that would have made for some light-hearted, spooky fun.
